Athanasius was a bishop who was deeply loved by the people he was pastoral responsible for. He was a champion of holding on to right theology in the 4th century. He battled with the heresy of Arianism, the teaching that Jesus isn't eternal, that at some point in history past he was created by God. Athanasius stood firm on the biblical teaching of the eternal nature of Jesus and suffered dearly for it.
